Israel Demolishes Five-Storey Residential Building in East Jerusalem

Around 70 Palestinians Displaced as Al-Tur Building Is Demolished
EAST JERUSALEM — October 7, 2026: Israeli authorities demolished a five-storey residential building in the Al-Tur neighbourhood of East Jerusalem, displacing around 70 Palestinian residents and triggering renewed criticism over Israel's demolition policies in the occupied eastern part of the city.

The building contained 10 apartments and was demolished by Israeli bulldozers on Tuesday. Palestinian local authorities said residents had been pursued for years through demolition orders and fines while facing difficulties obtaining Israeli-issued construction permits.

Residents Given Little Time to Leave

According to residents quoted in reports, Israeli police arrived in the early hours of the morning with several bulldozers and surrounded the building.

Hanine Hreibat, a resident who rented one of the apartments, said police gave residents only about 10 minutes to leave. She said authorities allowed her to take only essential belongings, including medication, money, identification documents and a handbag.

Residents were subsequently seen attempting to recover clothes and household items from the rubble.

The demolition left families searching for temporary accommodation with residents saying they had nowhere permanent to go.

Israeli Government Defends Demolition

Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir attended the demolition site and defended the operation.

Ben Gvir said the building had been constructed without the required permit and publicly welcomed its demolition.

The Israeli government's position is that unauthorized construction can be subject to demolition under planning and building regulations. Palestinian residents and local authorities, however, argue that obtaining permits in East Jerusalem is extremely difficult, contributing to a serious housing shortage.

Palestinian Authorities Condemn Operation

The Jerusalem Governorate condemned the demolition, describing it as part of what it considers an escalating policy of demolishing Palestinian homes and displacing residents.

Palestinian officials accused Israeli authorities of attempting to change the demographic and urban character of East Jerusalem.

The governorate said the building's residents had faced years of legal and administrative pressure before the demolition was carried out.

Housing Crisis in East Jerusalem

East Jerusalem faces a significant housing shortage, with Palestinian residents frequently reporting difficulties obtaining building permits.

According to the UN humanitarian office, approximately 170 Palestinian structures in East Jerusalem have been demolished since the beginning of 2026, with lack of Israeli-issued building permits cited in the reported cases.

Palestinian authorities say the permitting system places residents in an extremely difficult position because of restrictions on construction and the shortage of available housing.

The issue has become one of the most contentious aspects of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Demolitions Raise International-Law Concerns

The United Nations has raised concerns about demolitions and evictions in East Jerusalem, particularly regarding their effects on Palestinian families and the demographic and geographic continuity of the city.

The UN has also documented cases in which families pursued legal avenues to obtain permits or challenge demolition orders.

The broader question of Israeli control and settlement policy in East Jerusalem remains deeply contested internationally.

Settler Violence Reported in the West Bank

The demolition came amid reports of separate violence involving Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

On the same day, AFP photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh was reportedly attacked while covering violence involving Palestinian olive farmers near Aqraba.

Reports said the veteran photographer suffered injuries and was taken to hospital, while his camera equipment was taken during the incident.

The incidents have added to concerns about escalating tensions across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Wider Political Context

The demolition comes amid continuing conflict and political tensions surrounding Israel and the Palestinians.

East Jerusalem remains one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. Israel regards the city as its capital, while Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.

Most of the international community does not recognise Israel's unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem.

The continuing demolition of Palestinian homes has therefore become part of a much wider political and legal dispute over the status and future of the city.

Residents Face an Uncertain Future

For the families who lived in the demolished building, the immediate issue is now finding somewhere to live.

Residents said they were forced to leave quickly and could recover only a limited number of belongings before the building was destroyed.

The demolition has therefore created an immediate humanitarian challenge for the affected families, while also intensifying debate over housing rights, planning regulations and Israel's policies in East Jerusalem.
