Islamabad September 23 Update: Containers Arrive as Authorities Prepare for Possible Road Restrictions

Islamabad | September 23, 2026 | PK News

🚧 Islamabad is entering a period of heightened preparations ahead of the September 27 PTI programme, with containers being positioned at important locations around the capital and nearby areas.

However, as of September 23, Islamabad's major entry and exit routes are still open, and traffic is currently moving normally, according to Islamabad police. Officials have said that any decision to close roads will depend on the situation and public-safety requirements.

At the same time, authorities have already begun preparing a much larger traffic-management plan.

🚧 Containers Being Positioned

Recent reporting says more than 2,000 containers have been deployed at different locations in Islamabad and Attock.

The reported purpose is to allow authorities to restrict movement on selected roads if required and to protect sensitive areas during the September 27 programme.

Other reports say containers are being positioned around locations including:

πŸ“ D-Chowk

πŸ“ Faizabad

πŸ“ Serena Chowk

πŸ“ Srinagar Highway

πŸ“ Margalla Avenue

πŸ“ T-Chowk / Rawat

πŸ“ Attock Bridge

These locations are important because they connect Islamabad with surrounding areas and major approaches to the capital.

πŸ›£οΈ What Is Happening With the Roads?

For now, there is no blanket closure of every road leading into Islamabad.

Police have said that roads remain open and that closures will be introduced according to circumstances. This means the traffic situation could change as September 27 approaches.

A major development, however, concerns the M-1 Motorway.

According to a traffic advisory reported on September 22, the M-1 between Islamabad and Peshawar is scheduled to close from 11pm on September 23 until further notice. The M-2 Lahore-Islamabad Motorway is reported to remain open.

This could affect people travelling between Peshawar, Islamabad and surrounding areas.

πŸ›£οΈ What About GT Road?

The GT Road is another important route being discussed in connection with the September 27 programme.

Because it provides an alternative connection between areas of Punjab, KP and the Islamabad-Rawalpindi region, authorities are monitoring this corridor as part of the wider preparations.

Reports have also mentioned possible restrictions around Chungi No. 26, Taxila and other northern approaches if required.

πŸ“ Attock Could Be Important

The Attock area is receiving particular attention because it connects Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Punjab.

Containers have reportedly been positioned around Attock Bridge, which is one of the important crossings on this corridor.

This does not mean that the bridge will necessarily remain closed throughout September 27.

Rather, the current arrangements give authorities the ability to restrict movement if circumstances require it.

πŸš— Rawalpindi–Islamabad Routes

The twin-city connection is another major part of the preparations.

Reports indicate that authorities are preparing arrangements around Rawat, Faizabad, Pirwadhai, Chungi No. 26 and other entry points.

A security plan reported by Aaj English says authorities are considering restrictions at around 30 entry and exit points across the twin cities, including 11 routes in Rawalpindi.

Again, these should be understood as planned or prepared restrictions, rather than claiming that every one of these routes is already closed.

πŸ™οΈ Islamabad's Current Situation

As of September 22:

🟒 Major routes are currently open.

🚧 Containers have already been positioned at several strategic locations.

πŸ›£οΈ M-1 is scheduled for closure from September 23.

πŸš— Traffic authorities are preparing alternative route-management measures.

πŸ“ Attock and Islamabad entry points are receiving particular attention.

πŸ”„ Further road restrictions could be introduced depending on developments.

πŸ“… What Could Change Before September 27?

The traffic situation is likely to remain fluid over the next few days.

Authorities could:

🚧 increase the number of barriers;

πŸ›£οΈ restrict additional roads;

🚦 introduce diversions;

πŸš— keep selected routes open for normal traffic;

πŸ“ restrict access to particular sensitive areas;

or

πŸ”“ reopen routes depending on the situation.

Therefore, people travelling to or through Islamabad should check official traffic updates shortly before travelling rather than relying on information published several days earlier.

πŸ”Ž PK News Current Assessment

The current picture is not that Islamabad has already been completely sealed.

Instead, authorities appear to be preparing a flexible road-management system in which containers and barriers can be used at important points if restrictions become necessary.

The most significant developments to watch are the M-1 closure, Attock crossings, GT Road, Rawalpindi approaches, Faizabad, Rawat and the main Islamabad entry points.

The situation could change between now and September 27, so the final road map should be based on the latest official traffic announcements.

PK News will continue monitoring Islamabad's roads, traffic situation and September 27 preparations as new information becomes available.
